Become a Swimming Official with GYSC
Swimming competitions couldn’t run without dedicated officials, and at Great Yarmouth Swimming Club, we are always looking for parents and volunteers to get involved. Becoming an official is a great way to support your child’s swimming journey, gain a deeper understanding of the sport, and contribute to the smooth running of galas.
What is a Swimming Official?
Swimming officials are trained volunteers who ensure competitions run fairly and in accordance with Swim England’s rules. There are different roles within officiating, from timekeeping to judging strokes and turns. No prior experience is required—just a willingness to learn and get involved.
What’s Involved?
Officials play a crucial role in ensuring races are conducted fairly and smoothly. Some of the key roles include:
- Timekeeper – Accurately recording swimmers’ times.
- Stroke & Turn Judge – Ensuring swimmers follow the correct stroke and turn techniques.
- Starter – Ensuring fair and consistent race starts.
- Referee – Overseeing the entire competition to ensure rules are followed.
New officials usually start as Timekeepers before progressing to Judge Level 1 (J1), where they learn about strokes, turns, and disqualifications.
Why Become an Official?
