On Sunday 4th September swimmers from Great Yarmouth Swimming Club competed in the Nifty 50s gala, hosted by Thetford Dolphins at the Waterworld Leisure Centre in Thetford.


This open gala was attended by clubs throughout the region, including City of Cambridge, City of Ipswich, West Norfolk and many others. Swimmers were able to compete in up to 5 events each, comprising of 50m freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly and 100m individual medley, with medals being awarded for finishing in the top 6 of each age group.


Top performer for Great Yarmouth at the gala was Anna Duffield, who won an outstanding 3 golds in the age 14 50m backstroke, butterfly and 100m individual medley, a silver in 50m freestyle and 4th in 50m breaststroke. Also swimming impressively was Tommy Chandler who took gold in the age 14 50m backstroke and breaststroke and came away with silver in the 100m IM, bronze in 50m breaststroke and 4th in 50m freestyle.


Other medal winners from Great Yarmouth included: Kelsey Wilson (12) who took silver in 50m breaststroke and freestyle and a 4th in the 100m IM; Anna Pearce (11) swam strongly to win a silver in 50m butterfly, bronze in 100m IM, 4th in 50m freestyle and 5th in 50m breaststroke and 50m backstroke; Jacob Zandbergen (12) continued his return to form with 3 bronze medals for 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke and 100m IM along with a 4th in 50m backstroke and 6th in 50m breaststroke; Ryan Webb (14) performed consistently well with 3 6th place finishes in 50m breaststroke, 50m backstroke and 100m IM; Ernest Blas (13) took 5th in 50m freestyle closely followed by Raul Hasmasan (13) who was 6th in the same event; finally Honeysuckle Carlyon-Blanchard (10) who took a confident 6th in 100m IM.


Other swimmers competing in the gala were Melissa Duffield, Mollie Medler, Rosie Medler and Bailey Medler, Ruby Oxborough, Macey James, Nathan Pitman, Luke Hurt and Charlie Shearing. Many of these swimmers achieved significant improvements on their previous race times, showing progress and future potential.
