The Midsummer Madness Gala was hosted by the City of Norwich Swimming Club at the UEA on Saturday 2nd July and Great Yarmouth Swimming Club sent a small team of swimmers to compete at it.
This was a level 3 gala, meaning that regional level swimmers and above were able to compete, and it was long course, meaning swimmers competed in the Olympic distance 50m pool, rather than the more common 25m pool that most galas are held in. Because of this, there were representatives from a variety of top clubs from out of the area, such as City of Cambridge, Mid-Bedfordshire and Leiston, resulting in the races during the gala being highly competitive.
The swimmers from GYSC put in solid performances with many achieving new personal best times, despite the challenge of a 50m pool. Christabella Aldrich came away having achieved a gold medal in the age 13 50m backstroke, an impressive result given the competition. She also took a silver in the 100m backstroke. Kelsey Wilson won an impressive 3 silver medals: in the 200m freestyle, the 100m freestyle and the 50m freestyle. Jacob Zandbergen also came away with a medal: bronze in the age 12, 50m freestyle. Anna Duffield achieved a 4th place in her 50m butterfly race, a creditable position given that having just turned 14 she was in a tough age category competing against 15, 16 and 17 year olds.
Many of the other swimmers also achieved top 8 placings, and gained a huge amount of experience from competing in a long course gala like this. Swimmers who attended this gala were: Christabella Aldrich, Ben Bedford, Francesca Brown, Honeysuckle Carlyon-Blanchard, Anna Duffield, Raul Hasmasan, Anna Pearce, Nathan Pitman, Kelsey Wilson and Jacob Zandbergen.
Well done to all the swimmers that competed, and thanks to the head coach and officials from the club. If you are interested in joining Great Yarmouth Swimming Club please contact head coach Liam Harvey email@example.com or find details at www.gysc.org.uk
