GYSC Club Championships 2017

Over the three evenings of 10th, 11th and 12th November 2017 swimmers from GYSC competed at the Phoenix pool in Gorleston in the annual club championships. This year has seen a change in format from previous years, with all the distances being included (from 25m races, for the 9s and under, up to 200m), and followed on from the distance championships a couple of weeks ago.

The championships were licensed and made use of the new timing buttons that the club have had installed at the pool, meaning that the results were available live on-line. GYSC have also, this year, increased their highly committed team of officials, who are all volunteers that give up their own time to officiate, enabling the swimmers to compete in galas such as this. Any parents or supporters of the club who would be interested in qualifying as an official would be most welcome, and should speak to David Gordon (Club Officials Officer) regarding this fulfilling role.

Events were spread over the 3 evenings, with swimmers competing for handicap trophies; novice trophies; to be age group winners, and for the overall age group winner of the Hughes TV and Audio Trophy. Results were calculated and the winners announced on e-mail by Chairman Nigel Utting.

Alongside the standard races, with the live on-line results, the handicap trophies have been a long-standing tradition at Great Yarmouth and give an opportunity for all swimmers to win a trophy that celebrates reaching their own potential no matter who else is in their age category. The placings are calculated by ranking swimmers who are closest to a 5% improvement on their current recorded personal best time. The theory behind the 5% limit is to encourage swimmers to strive to achieve and celebrate improvement whilst not disadvantaging those swimmers who regularly compete in galas (club or open) and so have very current pb times, making them harder to break. Novice trophies can only be won by swimmers who have not previously won a trophy in a club event, and the age group winners are decided through a points system earnt across the four disciplines of backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle.

Swimmers who achieved a top 3 result, or are winners of their age group, will be able to collect their trophies at the annual presentation evening, held at the Imperial Hotel on 20th January. Tickets will be available for purchase very soon. All squad swimmers and their families are welcome to attend this celebratory event, but tickets will sell out fast and numbers are limited, so if you’d like to come keep an eye on the website for further details (

There were some excellent swims throughout the weekend, and some very close fought races. The winners of the handicap, novice and age group trophies were:
