A large squad of swimmers from Great Yarmouth Swimming Club took part in the recent County Challenge Gala, which was held at Dereham, over two weekends in Junes. Swimmers from silver, gold, platinum and elite squads within the club were represented, with some swimmers competing at a Norfolk County gala for the first time.
The club performed very well, with some excellent individual swims gaining not only a huge number of medals but also an impressive amount of personal best race times, indicating that progress continues throughout the club. The club came away with 76 top 6 placings, 20 of which were gold medals.
Top performers from GYSC were: Raul Hasmasan, who has perhaps shown the greatest improvement in the club recently. He won 4 gold medals in the boys age 13 category for 50m backstroke, 200m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 50m freestyle, along with 4 bronze medals, a 4th, a 5th and a 6th place. Emma Gordon also took 4 gold medals, in the girls age 15 category, for 200m IM, 100m freestyle, 200m breaststroke and 50m butterfly and also took 4 silver medals and a 4th place.
Sam Coman continued his current run of good form by winning 4 gold medals in the age 10 and under group, in 200m breaststroke, 200m backstroke, 200m butterfly and 100m freestyle. He also came away with a silver and 4th place. He was pushed hard in that age category by another GYSC swimmer, Harvey Larner, who continues to improve, winning 2 golds himself in 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle and who also took a strong silver in 100m freestyle along with a bronze and a 4th place.
Anna Pearce put in a great performance throughout the gala, swimming strongly to take golds in 200m IM and 200m freestyle, along with a silver, 3 4th places and a 6th in her age category of 12 and under. In the boys age 11 and under Ben Bedford swam convincingly in all 4 of the races he competed in coming away with gold in 50 freestyle, a silver, a bronze and a 4th. Kelsey Wilson maintained her excellent form, taking gold in both 100m butterfly and 200m butterfly, the first time she had ever swum the 200m butterfly race at a gala. She also took a silver, a bronze and a 5th. Ryan Webb won a well-deserved gold in the boys age 15 50m backstroke, along with a silver, 2 4th places, 2 5th places and a 6th.
Other medal winners included: Mollie Medler, Rosie Medler, Finley Coman, Finley Browne, Charlie Shearing, Rhys Jarvis, Nathan Pitman, Jacob Zandbergen, Ernest Blas, Christabella Aldrich, Jack Hartley, Abbey Secker and Anna Duffield.
