County Challenge 2018 Report

The Norfolk County Challenge gala took place on the 23rdand 24thof June in Thetford. To compete in this gala, swimmers must have achieved qualifying times for each event, and there were some very fast races over the course of the weekend’s racing.  Great Yarmouth had 20 swimmers who competed and as a club they came away with an impressive 31 medals, and some fantastic new personal best times.

 

GYSC’s most successful swimmer of the weekend was undoubtedly Amelia Dibble. She swam 11 races and took a gold or silver in every single race – an outstanding performance.  She won gold in the girls age 11 200m backstroke, 50m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 50m breaststroke and 100m butterfly along with silver in 100m freestyle, 200m breaststroke, 50m backstroke, 200m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 100m IM.

 

Girls Vice-Captain Anna Pearce also had a busy weekend competing in 10 races and in a very tough age group, with some exceptionally fast swimmers, swam strongly to take bronze in 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle and 50m butterfly.

 

Another swimmer who had a full on weekend of racing was Jasmine Coleman. She competed at the County Challenge on the Saturday taking a gold in both the 200m backstroke and 100m freestyle.  She then took part in the Lowestoft Midsummer Open Meet on the Sunday and came away with gold medals in each of the three races that she did. There was little recovery time between each race with all three being raced in the space of 20 minutes. In the 200m butterfly Jasmine swam a time of 2.53.63 a gold medal swim and new regional qualification time for her. She also took gold at 50m butterfly and 100m butterfly – both swum in new pb times.

 

The boys also had a successful weekend at the County Challenge. In the age 12s, Sam Coman took an excellent gold in the 200m freestyle and Harvey Larner took silver in the 200m freestyle and bronze in the 50m butterfly.  Jack Tate also took a great silver in the 100m backstroke.

 

The 14 year olds also swam well with Jacob Zandbergen, who competed on the Saturday, winning the 50m backstroke and the 200m freestyle, and taking silver in the 100m butterfly and 100m backstroke.  Like Jasmine he also participated in the Lowestoft gala on the Sunday, earning himself another two gold medals in the 50m freestyle and the 100m freestyle after impressive swims, and a very successful weekend.

 

Oliver Grimmer swam a huge personal best time to take silver in the 200m backstroke and bronze in the 100m butterfly.  Men’s captain Raul Hasmasan won gold in the 50m backstroke and Ernest Blas had a great meet taking 3 golds in 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle and 200m freestyle along with a silver in the 200m IM.

 

Other swimmers who participated were: Skye Nichols, Bethany Gordon, Binnie Rose Tyler, Grace Turner, Zoe Land, Alyssa Greenall, Francesca Brown, Melissa Duffield, Lucy Gordon and Nathan Pitman.  Well done to all the swimmers and thanks to the poolside coaching team and volunteers.
