Gala Reports

The evening of Saturday 4th February saw a team of swimmers from Great Yarmouth Swimming Club travel to Wymondham to take part in round 2 of the Norfolk Junior League. In this league, swimmers aged 12 and under battle it out to win points for their clubs, which place them for the evening, and then give an overall result for the league at the end of the series of galas.

Round 2 saw GYSC competing against West Norfolk, Diss Otters, Norwich Swan ‘B’ team and the North Norfolk Vikings in closely fought races throughout the evening. The team of young swimmers showed great spirit and battled hard to gain 3rd place at the end of the night, beating Norwich Swan ‘B’ and North Norfolk Vikings, whilst being pipped by Diss Otters, and the winners West Norfolk.

The age 9 and 10 boys (Harvey Larner, Thomas Smith, Sam Coman and Billy Wilson) were on particularly fine form, gaining GYSC wins in the 100m medley relay, the 100m freestyle relay and contributing the age 9 girls/boys 100m medley relay (with Skye Nichols and Bethany Gordon). Billy Wilson also won 2 races for GYSC in his age 9 group: the 25m fly and the 25m breaststroke, giving the team valuable points, and smashing his previous personal best times. The Yarmouth boys also showed speed and strength in the age 11s with Benjamin Bedford taking the win in the 50m backstroke and Finley Coman winning the 50m freestyle. Ben and Finley, along with Nathan and Oliver, were part of the age 11/12 100m freestyle relay which was first home, with another win for the GYSC team.

Other notable swims of the night included Jasmine Coleman who swam an outstanding 50m butterfly that took over 3 seconds off her previous best time, and Oliver Grimmer’s 50m freestyle which was also his fastest ever at that distance, and broke the 40 second barrier for the first time for him.

Coach Rhianna James commented that team spirit and determination was high, and that the team’s performance had been a significant improvement from the first round, which was a real pleasure for her to see.

Swimmers who made up the team were: Anna Pearce, Benjamin Bedford, Bethany Gordon, Billy Wlison, Finley Coman, Francesca Brown, Harvey Larner, Honeysuckle Carlyon-Blanchard, Jasmine Coleman, Mollie Medler, Nathan Pitman, Oliver Grimmer, Sam Coman, Skye Nichols, Thomas Smith and Zoe Land.

Well done to all the swimmers who took part and thanks to the coaching team for their support on the night.
