GREAT YARMOUTH ‘YOUNG STARS’
Great Yarmouth Lowestoft & Oulton Broad and Long Stratton swimmers met last weekend to battle in the Young Stars Gala, for the Cape Cup. With 3 teams involved, there was fierce competition, culminating in a win for Great Yarmouth with Lowestoft & Oulton Broad just 4 points behind.
A B/C gala for first timers and club swimmers, a large proportion of the 8 – 11 year olds came together for the first home gala of 2014 with 24 of the 31 individual race swimmers achieving Personal Best (PB) times. Times are a useful guide to be used for the County Challenge in late June.
For the 8 year and under age group; Isabelle Brown, Lilly Bullen, Sam Cohen and Harry Wemyss all achieved PB’s. Most of the 9 and under swimmers; Summer Adair, Anna Pearce, Julianna Mercado, Lucie Ingham, Ben Brown, Finley Coman and Ben Bedford did likewise. Lucie ingham also swam up an age group improving on her earlier PB in the 25m butterfly stroke, with the 10/u group; Teya Simmons, Ruby Oxborough, Hannah Stannard, Michael Brown, Ernest Blaas and Jack Hartley. Even the 11/u age group had a club member swimming for the first time to make up 6 swimmers; Anna Duffield, Hollie Haylett, Macey James, Kyle Jones, Raul Hasmasan and Tommy Chandler.
It was not until the last race involving the whole team in a 16 X 25m Canon with everything for the leading 2 teams to race for, and the crowd was whipped to a frenzy cheering their teams that the final results gave: Great Yarmouth 87 points, Lowestoft & Oulton Broad 83 points, Long Stratton 65 points.
