Swimming - Training - Teaching

Progression Model

Once a request to join the club is received and spaces are available you will be invited to attend either lessons or squad training dependant upon your ability.

On your first visit to the club you will be assessed and placed into a group of swimmers with a similar ability, you will then learn as a group.

The club operates under the framework of the Long Term Athlete DevelopmentĀ guidelines as devised by the ASA.

Teaching Lessons

The club runs the National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS). At each stage of your lessons you will be assessed and once you have achieved the desired level you can apply for the award via the club. In lessons the club runs through levels 1 – 7 of the NPTS and once assessed at each stage you have the opportunity to move to the next level.

Lessons are currently held on Monday and Tuesday evenings at the Great Yarmouth High School and on Saturday mornings at the Great Yarmouth High School and the Phoenix pool, Bradwell. Each lesson lasts for half an hour.

Twice a year the club holds a mini-gala at the High School in Great Yarmouth, which is open to all junior members of the club. The club runs this gala as it would any other and is your introduction to competitive swimming. Once you have achieved level 7, it is recommended that you enter the mini-gala, as this will give the Club Coach the opportunity to see how you are progressing. If you are deemed suitable the coach will ask you if you wish to take your swimming to the next level and join the coaching squads. The Club Coach also visits the teaching lessons every 6-8 weeks to see if you or your parents have any questions. If at this time the coach considers you are at the desired level, you may be asked if you wish to attend squad sessions.
